The Wetumpka Impact Crater Commission
The Wetumpka Impact Crater Commission was established to preserve, study, and promote one of Alabama’s most significant natural and scientific resources. The Commission serves as a collaborative body dedicated to protecting the integrity of the crater while advancing public education, scientific research, and responsible access for future generations.

Working in partnership with local governments, scientists, educators, landowners, and community stakeholders, the Commission helps ensure that the Wetumpka Impact Crater remains both protected and understood.

Creation of the Commission
The Commission was formally created through a joint resolution of the Elmore County Commission and the City of Wetumpka following the completion of a comprehensive six-month impact crater study.
In May 2002, Elmore County established the Wetumpka Impact Crater Study Commission to examine the scientific significance of the crater and explore opportunities for preservation, education, and public access. The Study Commission brought together experts, agencies, and community voices to evaluate long-term stewardship options.

Based on the findings and recommendations of that study, the City of Wetumpka and Elmore County jointly approved the formation of a permanent Impact Crater Commission in 2003. This action ensured continued coordination between local governments and provided a formal structure for ongoing crater-related efforts.
